Terms

These are the terms for using Temperance. We've kept them plain.

Last updated July 17, 2026

Acceptance and eligibility

By downloading Temperance during the public beta, or by using the service at all, you agree to these terms. You're responsible for your account and for keeping your sign-in details safe.

You agree to give us accurate information, and to be old enough to enter an agreement where you live. Temperance is intended for adults, not children; this is our interim policy while we finalize an exact minimum age. See our Privacy Policy for the specifics on age and children's data. And don't use the service for anyone you're not allowed to act for.

What the service is

Temperance is a personal assistant you talk to in plain words. It connects to your calendar, keeps your to-dos and a private second brain, and does small research and planning on your behalf. We're still building, so the service will change and improve over time.

When Temperance connects to Gmail, it can read your messages and draft replies for you. It can never send anything from your Gmail account. That one is enforced in the software, not just promised.

On a paid plan, Temperance can send email from its own Temperance address once you ask it to. That is a different thing from sending as you, and it is the only sending it does.

We're working toward Temperance taking real-world actions for you when you ask, like calls, bookings, and payments. Those features aren't live yet. When they are, we'll say so plainly here, and for anything that can't be undone, Temperance will always ask you first.

License and intellectual property

Temperance is licensed to you, not sold. Subject to these terms, we grant you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to download and use the app for your own personal use. Using the service doesn't give you any ownership interest in the app or in the software behind it.

Temperance, the Temperance name and logo, and the underlying software, models, and technology that power the service belong to us (or our licensors) and are protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual-property laws. Nothing in these terms transfers any of that to you, beyond the limited license above.

Public beta status

Temperance is available in public beta on the App Store. While it's in beta, features may move, pause, or change as we get the product right.

Price and billing

Temperance is offered on three plans: Free, Plus at $30 a month, and Executive at $200 a month. There are no hidden add-ons.

Purchases and renewals are billed through the payment method shown at checkout when you subscribe. We expect this to run through Apple's App Store billing tied to your Apple ID, but the exact billing mechanism will be confirmed, and corrected here if needed, before this page is published. The subscription renews automatically at the price and interval shown when you subscribe, unless you cancel first. The price you'll actually pay depends on the plan you choose, and it's always shown before you subscribe.

If we ever change the subscription price, we'll notify you in advance. Any new price applies starting with your next renewal, never to a period you've already paid for, and you'll have the chance to cancel before the new price takes effect.

If Apple's App Store turns out to be the billing provider, you'll manage and cancel your subscription in your Apple ID settings rather than inside Temperance, and Apple will hold your invoice and receipt history rather than us. This section will be updated to state the confirmed mechanics plainly once they're locked in.

Subscription charges are generally non-refundable. If a purchase is billed through the App Store, refund requests are handled directly by Apple under Apple's own refund policies, not by us; if we ever bill you directly, we'll issue refunds only where required by law or at our discretion.

Your content and data

Your calendar, tasks, notes, and the things you connect stay yours. You give us only the permission we need to process them so the assistant can do its job for you, and nothing more. How we handle your data is set out in our Privacy Policy, which is part of these terms.

You keep ownership of everything you create in Temperance. You grant us a limited license to store, process, and show it back to you, and only when you explicitly choose to, to a friend you've connected with, solely to run the service for you.

Drafts, summaries, and anything else Temperance writes on your behalf can contain mistakes. Review them before you rely on them, or send them yourself.

Using it fairly

Use Temperance for your own legitimate purposes. Don't try to break it, misuse it, overload it, use it to do anything unlawful, or access it in ways these terms don't allow. That includes:

  • Illegal activity, or using Temperance to help with it
  • Harassing, threatening, or abusing anyone through the service
  • Scraping, reverse-engineering, or copying the service
  • Getting around our security or access controls
  • Impersonating someone, or claiming permission you don't have

We may suspend accounts that put the service or other people at risk.

When the assistant acts for you

Like any assistant, Temperance can misread a request, act on incomplete information, or make a mistake. For anything irreversible, costly, or sent to someone else on your behalf, like a booking, a payment, or a message, Temperance asks you to confirm first. That confirmation is what makes the action final, and you're responsible for reviewing what you confirm before you give it.

Some features complete a purchase or booking through another company, like a flight search or a grocery order. In those cases, Temperance isn't a party to the purchase itself. The vendor's own terms and policies apply, and our role is limited to carrying your request to them and handing back what they send.

Availability and changes

We work to keep Temperance reliable, but we can't promise it will always be available or error-free, especially while it's early. We may update, pause, or change parts of the service, and we'll try to give reasonable notice of anything significant.

The legal part

The service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including the implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. To the fullest extent the law allows, we're not liable for indirect or incidental losses, and our total responsibility is limited to what you've paid us in the recent past. Nothing here removes rights you have that can't be waived under the law that applies to you.

If you misuse Temperance or break these terms and that causes a claim against us, you agree to cover the reasonable costs that causes. This doesn't extend to mistakes the assistant itself makes while doing what it's meant to do.

Ending things

You can stop using Temperance any time. We may suspend or end your access if these terms are broken, or if we reasonably believe your account puts the service or other people at risk. If we suspend or end your account, we'll tell you why, and you can appeal by contacting us at hello@trytemperance.com; we'll review appeals in good faith and restore access if a suspension or termination turns out to have been a mistake.

If you ask us to erase your data, we remove your to-dos, your notes, and your saved memories. A few things are kept on purpose: a read-only copy of any templates you've saved, the recurring daily-brief job if you've turned one on, friend connections you've accepted, and your device preferences. Your calendar stays connected until you disconnect it in the app.

Erasing your data isn't the same as deleting your underlying sign-in account. That's a separate record today, and it isn't removed automatically. If you'd like it gone too, contact us and we'll handle it directly.

Governing law and dispute resolution

These terms are governed by the laws of [Governing State] (our governing jurisdiction — a placeholder pending confirmation and to be filled in before this page is published), without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute that can't be worked out informally will be handled in the state or federal courts located there, and you agree to that venue.

We haven't included an arbitration clause or a class-action waiver here. If we ever add one, it will come with real legal review, not as boilerplate.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the product grows. If a change is significant, we'll make it clear. The date at the top reflects the current version, and continuing to use Temperance after a change means you accept it.

Questions

If anything here is unclear, email us at hello@trytemperance.com (a placeholder until a real, monitored support address is confirmed). We read and reply.
